Working with Tesco on Alexipack

A major new product from Alexir Packaging sees its launch with the UK’s biggest food retailer.

The “alexipack”® is an entirely new product from Alexir Packaging. It combines the use of a bespoke material developed in conjunction with a leading board mill and unique tray forming technology. It is a patented tray with an optional lid and is a proven packing line system specifically designed to be used for Ready Meals.

  • The majority of pack is made from renewable and sustainable resources
  • It can be suitable for dual oven, freezer and chiller use.
  • The flat flanges have been created for ease of production at sealing stage
  • The wide, clear surfaces offer excellent branding opportunities
  • It offers excellent weight reduction opportunities compared to current formats

History of the product

The project presented many challenges, foremost being able to offer the required leak resistant qualities of packing chilled ready meals within a board substrate. Substantial testing was carried out at Bakkavor, Samworth Brothers and Kerry Foods by both clients and Alexir technical teams to ensure that shelf life, transit properties and pack integrity met with Tesco's criteria.

Launch

On 3rd January 2008 Tesco launched their new re-branded ‘Healthy Living’ range. Amongst the new food range were 48 different recipes of chilled ready meals. Each of the recipes was packed in the new “alexipack”®  tray.

Sustainable packaging as a standard

The tray meets some of the environmental challenges recently placed upon many of Tesco's suppliers. “alexipack”®  offers a 35% packaging weight saving against the 2007 packaging format and 75% of the material content is from renewable and sustainable resources.
